The
base Dodge Caravan sees primarily fleet duty, but it also offers reasonable
comfort for seven passengers at a low price.
It is crude, cheap-feeling, and dated, it lacks common features like
antilock brakes, and its seats must be taken out to maximize cargo space
rather than stowed flat. But for just above $18,000, you get a vehicle that
can handle seven passengers and/or a lot of cargo, and aside from the
omission of antilock brakes, comes with the basic accessories that a number
of the others in this group do without to meet the price requirement.
It
isn’t a good car. But it’s the best way to carry six passengers comfortably
in this group.
But as this group's
selection of cars that are either too small for 6-passenger comfort and
those that sell based primarily on the virtue of their price demonstrates,
you can do better than the best of this group. A few thousand dollars more
will fetch far superior minivans than those that slot into this price range,
or buying slightly used could get the same good vans under $20,000. But if
you must buy new, and it must be under $20,000, then it must be one of these
nine, and the Caravan does the best of these nine.
