3rd Place: Dodge Grand Caravan
|
The Grand Caravan is the
best-selling minivan in the United States for its combination of a low price
and general competence.
But
it isn’t up to the level of many newer minivans (2008 brings a redesign) in
terms of refinement, interior quality, or ride and handling control.
However, it is not those vices that hurt it most here, as the better
competition remains squarely above this group’s price limit. It is the fact
that as it scrapes below $20,000, the Grand Caravan sheds family-friendly
features like side airbags, and basic conveniences like power windows,
locks, and mirrors, that really knocks it down.
The Grand Caravan fits
seven adults comfortably, and unlike in the Chevrolet Uplander and
short-wheelbase Caravan, the third-row seat folds flat into the floor. For
maximum cargo capacity and passenger comfort in this price range, this is
it. But recognize the sacrifices in equipment and engineering that make it
inexpensive.
