Crash tests intend to replicate certain types
of accidents to provide a better idea of how cars will generally perform in an
accident situation. While they obviously cannot identify what will happen in
every accident scenario, these tests are worth noting to get a general idea of
relative safety. Note that no frontal crash tests give extra credit for a higher
weight that almost always helps in a real-world accident, but the side crash
tests do.
Two agencies crash-test cars for the US
market: the IIHS and NHTSA.
NHTSA conducts a frontal crash test, a side
crash test, and a rollover resistance evaluation. In NHTSA's ranking system,
five stars is the highest ranking, and one star is the lowest. NHTSA also has
less strict tests that all new cars sold in the United States are required to

The IIHS conducts a frontal-offset crash test
and a side crash test, as well as a head restraint evaluation. Its side crash
test is more difficult to pass than NHTSA's, and the frontal test rates some
different items and creates rather different conditions. Its rating system, from
lowest to highest, is Poor, Marginal, Acceptable, Good. Read more about what

Below are the crash test results for every
current car on the US market. For NHTSA tests, the two numbers refer to the
number of stars out of five that the driver and the passenger received in the
test. An asterisk means that the car was found to have a "Safety Concern", a
problem that isn't reflected in the rankings. In rollover ranking, it means that
the car tipped up in its dynamic tests.
